Description
This is a very nice example of the Spanish Cross in Bronze Grade with Swords, one of 8,462 awarded by Germany. These were awarded to individuals involved in front line combat during the war. It is in very good condition with a lovely patina on the brass. There is no damage or repairs to the reverse hardware. This badge though unmarked was produced by Paul Meybauer, Berlin. Tombac construction with soldered on set up. Very good condition, no damage or repairs, untouched piece. Premium cross here!
Note – The Spanish Cross (Spanienkreuz) was instituted on April 14th, 1939, to recognize those German Forces who served in the Spanish Civil War (July 1936- March 1939). The “Condor Legion” who fought on the side of General Franco against communism in Spain was composed, at least publicly, of volunteers. Because of their semi-official status no awards were instituted prior to or during the war, and therefore there was no method to recognize German bravery and accomplishment until 1939. The purpose of the Spanish Cross therefore was two fold; It was not only to be a campaign medal, but also an award recognizing achievements.
