Description
Recent set I picked up in a trade was this amazing ‘SS-Schule Tölz’ Officer cufftitle with a photograph of the soldier wearing this insignia, as well as a name tag in cloth. These items were separated from a very large grouping that was found a year ago, this group of items is very well known to the collector community and is shown in this listing before being broken up. These items belonged to Waffen-SS Officer SS-Obersturmfuhrer Wolfgang Sinning, he was born January 1st, 1922 and would pass away March 18th, 2008. During his he would fight with Der Führer and Deutschland in combat for Moscow, Charkov, Kursk and Normandy. He would earn the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, Wound badge in Black & Silver, as well as the Close Combat in Bronze. This insignia is rare on its own merits, add in the fact that we know who wore this piece during the war as well as a photograph with it in wear is extremely rare!
Note – SS-Junkerschule Bad Tölz was the officers’ training school for the Waffen-SS. It was the SS equivalent of Britain’s Sandhurst and Americas West Point. The school was established in 1937 and constructed by Alois Degano, in the town of Bad Tölz which is about 30 miles south of Munich and the location was seemingly chosen because it had both good transport links and was in an inspiring location. The design and construction of the school was intended to impress the staff, students, visitors and passers-by. A sub camp of the Dachau concentration camp was located in the town of Bad Tölz which provided labour for the SS-Junkerschule and the Zentralbauleitung (Central Administration Building). The School operated until the end of World War II in 1945 and after the war the former SS-Junkerschule was the base of the U.S. Army’s 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group until 1991.
