Description
Mint example of a 36th Waffen-SS Grenadier ‘Dirlewanger‘ Collar Tab. This style of tab is known in the collecting community as being produced by the political prisoners of the “Dachau” concentration camp, located in Bavaria just outside of Munich. Since the end of the war these tabs have been found predominately in U.S. Veterans estates after they brought them home from Europe as “War Souvenirs”. The tab itself is made of a buckram backing with black badge cloth folded over the front and stitched in place on the reverse with a white thread. The embroidered emblem on the front is executed in a white cotton thread. A beautiful example of a sought after 36th Waffen-SS Dirlewanger Collar Tab.
Note – The 36th Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS “Dirlewanger” was originally formed in early 1944 from convicted criminals, primarily poachers, cashiered army personnel and other undesirables as the SS-Regiment “Dirlewanger”. The unit evolved into the SS-Sturmbrigade “Dirlewanger” in December 1944 and in February 1945 the unit gained Divisional status and was designated, 36. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS “Dirlewanger”. Although given Divisional status on paper the unit actually never surpassed Brigade strength.
